Project 1

Diagramming Architectural Principles - Group ( 10% )

1. In groups of 5-6 members, we will be assigned one of several renowned architects and their significant buildings.

2. Our task is to perform background research on the assigned architect and their chosen key building, creating a full set of architectural drawings (scale 1:50). These drawings will be hand-drawn on A3 landscape format and carefully rendered.

3. We will then examine and analyze the key building through these drawings (i.e., floor plan, sections, elevations, etc.). Our analysis should concentrate on the following aspects:

  • Main Design Intentions / Design Ethos

  • Context – Tropical settings, climate, natural lighting, and ventilation

  • Space Planning (organization & relationship) - centralized, interlocking

  • Circulation & Zoning – spiral, linear, radial / private, semi-private

  • Structure – grid, rhythm

We will explore how these concepts are represented through architectural diagramming principles.

4.Based on our analysis, we will compile our findings into a series of 5 analysis diagrams and 5 diagrammatic models (12 x 12 x 8 cm). These diagrams and models should be clear and detailed, effectively communicating the analysis of the underlying ideas within the key building.

TGC 2.2 Locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively

In this project, identifying architects and their works required me to locate, extract, synthesize, and utilize information effectively. I researched the architect and the significant building, carefully extracted relevant details, and synthesized this information to understand their design philosophies and styles. This process honed my ability to manage and apply information, which is essential in architecture.

TGC 5.1 Understand team dynamics and mobilize the power of teams

Working in a team on the design process taught me a lot about team dynamics and harnessing the power of collaboration. I learned to value each member's strengths and how effective communication and cooperation can lead to a successful design outcome. This experience underscored the importance of trust and leveraging diverse skills within a team.
