Project 3
Designing with Architectural Principles, Materiality,
Context and User - Individual ( 60% )
For the final task, we need to design a habitable retreat for ourselves and others with similar interests. Our first step is to define the site boundaries of 300sqm-400sqm, which will include the Nature Observation Post from Project 2.
Our retreat design at the National Botanical Garden, Shah Alam, should incorporate:
1. The Nature Observation Post (from Project 2)
2. Resting areas
3. Working areas
4. Recreational areas
5. Supporting spaces such as toilets and a pantry
The built-up space for the structure should not exceed 150sqm and must accommodate four people comfortably for short stays of 2-3 days. The design must be sensitive to the tropical site context, ensuring the architecture complements the landscape and activities. Our design should effectively demonstrate our architectural intentions through the use of principles, materials, and constructability, creating a memorable and engaging spatial experience.

Reflection
TGC 1.1 : Able to put theories into practice
Introducing the notions of concepts, program, and process in architectural design has been instrumental in putting theories into practice. By understanding and applying these notions, I was able to translate theoretical knowledge into tangible design solutions. This process involved not only conceptualizing ideas but also integrating them into a structured program and workflow, demonstrating how theoretical principles can effectively guide practical architectural outcomes.
TGC 2.2 Locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively
I am able to turn design ideas into habitable spaces by effectively locating, extracting, and using information. This skill is crucial for translating concepts into practical, functional designs.
TGC 3.1 : Think critically and creatively
Designing a simple building that meets user requirements and respects the site context required me to think critically and creatively. I had to carefully balance internal elements like layout and circulation with external aspects such as aesthetics and forms. This process challenged me to analyze how each design decision impacts both functionality and visual appeal, leading to innovative solutions that harmonize with the site while fulfilling user needs.
