Project 1C
Reclaimed Architecture: < A Dance Annexe > - Individual ( 60% )
We are required to design a two-storey Dance House annex to The Encore, focused on reclaiming, preserving, and promoting Malacca's local dance culture. The building must be a standalone, monolithic form between 350sqm to 450sqm, located on either the Strait-Site or Park-Site. The design should include dance facilities, a gallery, retail areas, food and beverage services, and be accessible to all. It must address the local climate, cultural context, and user experience while integrating environmental, construction, and material considerations.

Reflection
TGC 3.1 Think critically and creatively
Designing a small-scale community building challenged me to think critically and creatively at every stage. By analyzing the site and understanding the users' needs, I crafted a design that harmonized functionality with environmental sustainability. I embraced the opportunity to explore spatial poetics, ensuring the building not only served its purpose but also inspired connection and engagement. This process required innovative thinking to balance practicality and artistry, resulting in a design that responded thoughtfully to the suburban context while meeting the community's aspirations.
TGC 3.2 Define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions
In this project, I learned to resolve challenges in building construction, materials, and environmental considerations by defining and analyzing the problems presented by the site and design requirements. For instance, selecting sustainable materials required me to evaluate their availability, durability, and environmental impact. I also tackled climate-related issues by incorporating passive design strategies, ensuring the building was both functional and energy-efficient. This process strengthened my ability to approach problems methodically and develop effective solutions that aligned with the project's goals.
TGC 4.1 Communicate appropriately in various settings and modes
Presenting my design to peers, tutors, and professionals enhanced my ability to create clear visuals and adapt my communication to different audiences. It strengthened my confidence and highlighted the importance of effectively conveying design intent.
