PHASE 1

Preliminary studies – Townscape Appraisal & Mini Urban Intervention - Group ( 15% )

The studio is organised into three phases: Phase 1 focuses on townscape appraisal and urban intervention, Phase 2 on architectural strategy, and Phase 3 on design development. Located in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, the project responds to real urban issues of spatial character and social integration. We are tasked with designing a community-based Learning Institution that acts as an architectural catalyst for placemaking, enhancing public space, strengthening urban connections, and respecting the existing townscape and local identity.

Phase 1.1: Townscape Appraisal

We are required to analyse the site’s urban character at both macro and micro scales, focusing on street experience, urban fabric, public spaces, and social–cultural context. The aim is to identify key issues, opportunities, and place identity to inform the design direction.

Phase 1.2: Mini Urban Intervention

We are required to propose a small-scale urban intervention within a 15–20m radius of the site to respond to identified issues. The intervention activates public space and enhances social interaction, environmental quality, and place-making.

Reflection

TGC 1.1 Able to put theories into practice

Through analysing and interpreting urban situations, I was able to translate placemaking theories into practical design understanding. By applying theoretical concepts such as townscape, street life, and sense of place to the real conditions of the Brickfields streets, I learned how abstract ideas directly inform spatial character, movement, and social interaction. This process strengthened my ability to move beyond theoretical knowledge and use it as a tool to identify urban issues, opportunities, and placemaking qualities that guided my design decisions.

TGC 3.2 Define and analyse problems to arrive at effective solutions

In this project, I investigated and examined the site’s urban conditions to understand the challenges and opportunities for connecting with the local community. By analysing the spatial, social, and regulatory context, I was able to identify key issues and constraints that influenced my design decisions. This process strengthened my ability to define problems clearly and develop architectural strategies that are both practical and responsive, allowing me to propose solutions that effectively address urban needs while complying with design codes and regulations.
