PHASE 2

Architectural Design Strategy - Individual ( 15% )

We are required to develop our design strategy for a Learning Centre in Brickfields, responding to issues and inspirations from Phase 1. Our strategy should enhance the public realm, ensure legibility, ease of movement, adaptability, and diversity, while giving the project a strong character. Exploration of form and typologies through 1:200 models (linear, perimeter, diffused, layering, subtraction, overlapping) is compulsory.

We must also study two precedents—one international and one from tropical cities—to understand urban context, the role of learning centres in heritage areas, and design strategies suitable for tropical climates, including passive cooling, circulation, and community engagement.

Reflection

TGC 1.1 Able to put theories into practice

In this project, I applied the architectural theories and principles I learned to real urban conditions, translating abstract concepts into practical design solutions. By considering formal, cultural, legislative, structural, and environmental factors, I was able to develop a site-specific outcome that responds effectively to the context. This process strengthened my ability to put theory into practice, ensuring that my design is not only conceptually grounded but also feasible and responsive to the city and its communities.

TGC 3.1 Think critically and creatively

In this project, I investigated the site’s conditions and the needs of the local community to develop architectural strategies that are both practical and engaging. By examining urban, social, and regulatory factors, I was able to approach design challenges from multiple angles, exploring creative solutions that respond to context while complying with design codes. This process strengthened my ability to think critically about problems and experiment with innovative strategies that enhance connectivity, placemaking, and the quality of public spaces.
